Students will learn Spanish at the high-beginners level using communicative activities and specific tasks. They will be able to solve real situations referred to personal and social needs using the present indicative of regular and irregular verbs, main differences between ser and estar, reflexive verbs, imperative, preterite and imperfect of regular verbs, and the future form ir a + infinitive. They will also learn how to write personal letters and will do a final oral presentation comparing the main differences between the American and the Spanish cultures.

SP150 Intensive Elementary Spanish in Context click for information click to download pdf
This course is designed for those students that aim to have very good control, in one term, of the basic principles of Spanish beginning at a basic level and reaching the intermediate level The class will study in a communicative style, verb conjugations of the present and past indicative, reflexive verbs, imperative, uses of ser and estar, future with ir a + infinitive, agreement of nouns and adjectives. Likewise, students will read actual adapted texts, present orally some cultural aspect of Spain and write a personal journal to improve their writing skills.

SP201 Intermediate Spanish in Context I click for information click to download pdf
This class focuses on the usage of Spanish at the intermediate level. Students learn with specific tasks the conjugation of present tenses of regular and irregular verbs. The main focus is on the strategies needed for the narration: usage of appropriate connectors and all past tenses (preterite, imperfect, present perfect, and pluperfect indicative). They write weekly on a personal diary explaining the intercultural experiences lived in Spain. To improve their oral skill they prepare 2 presentations in class about cultural topics.

This course is designed for those students that aim to have very good control of the principles of Spanish at the intermediate level. There is a review of past tenses: preterite, imperfect, pluperfect and an introduction of subjunctive conjugation. The course utilizes extensive oral work in conjunction with reading and writing exercises focusing on prose texts, news articles, daily life, and culture. Students do 2 oral presentations in class about cultural aspects of Spain.

SP250 Intensive Intermediate Spanish in Context I-II click for information click to download pdf
This accelerated course combines SP 201 and SP 202 in one term. There will be a review of fundamental and special grammatical points, reading and analysis of more complex texts, and aural/oral exercises based on everyday situations and practice narrating a paragraph in the past, present and future. Additional focus will be placed on writing exercises dealing with prose texts, news articles, daily life and culture.

This course is designed for students who have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish and want to improve their communicative competence. By using specific tasks, students gain knowledge of the usages of subjunctive in noun, relative and adverbial clauses. They improve their ability to express and defend their opinion. They will also learn strategies to be able to understand real texts taken from the media and literature related to contemporary Spain. Students have to do 2 oral presentations expressing their opinions or comparing cultural aspects of Spain and the USA.

This course aims to prepare the students for critical expression, offering them the necessary elements and resources to debate, support arguments, speculate in the past and the present, and declare their own wishes and opinions. The grammatical elements covered throughout the course include all tenses of subjunctive and the usage of idioms and Spanish proverbs. They do 2 oral presentations in class, and learn how to write a final research paper on a topic of professional or personal interest.

SP350 Intensive Advanced Grammar and Usage I-II click for information click to download pdf
This intensive course combines SP301 and SP302 in one term. This course follows a communicative teaching method and complex grammatical structures will be covered throughout the semester. Spanish subordinate clauses, reported speech and usage of all tenses from indicative to subjunctive mood will be studied. Students will practice their oral and written skills while being immersed in Spanish culture; they will actively participate in different communicative activities inside and outside the classroom. Similarly, reading analysis of literary texts and news articles will be a great part of the course in order for the student to become familiar with idioms, formal expressions and academic writing . At the end of this course, students will be at a high advanced level.

SP400 Advanced Writing Seminar click for information click to download pdf
This course is designed for those students who are at the advanced level and want to improve their writing skills. The main project of the class is a Spanish magazine done in class which will be posted every week in the IES Barcelona website. Each student will be responsible of a specific section of the magazine and will write one article per week following specific grammatical guidance. Students not only gain linguistic and cultural knowledge, but they improve their critical thinking and team work skills in this class.
