The principal objective to pursue by the student in this course is the familiarization of empirical investigation in the social sciences (how to formulate an investigation question and how to translate that question to into a actual working hypothesis). How to work with this hypothesis using various indicators and variables, how to look for empirical data to support the hypothesis. How to produce real social data. And finally, how to analyse the found data through various techniques. The course itself is divided into three parts. In the first part the student with reflect on the logic that her/she will use to undertake social science investigations. In the second part, the student will learn the principal quantative techniques for data analysis. In the third part, the student will study the quantitive techniques of data analysis.

The course studies the space that war occupies in modern culture, paying special attention to the way in which the problem of representation of the experience of violence has been dealt with in different media: novels, memoirs, documentary and fiction movies, painting, photographic journalism, comics. Since Homer's Iliad the epic tradition has been linked to the narration of bellical conflicts, and is one of the privileged manifestations of the relation between literature and history. The course objective will be to analyze the relationship between ideology and methods of representation of war, and contrast epic conventions with the replies that events like the Holocaust, the dropping of the atomic bomb, the Spanish civil war, the Vietnam war and the war in Bosnia, generate.
