Course focus on the Muslim and Christian Spain during the Middle Ages, since the arabic conquest, 8th century, till the 15th century. The course will emphasize the coexistence of two different cultures, societies and economies that distinguish the Spanish Middle Ages from the rest of Europe. The course is, as well, composed by some fieltrips through the city of Barcelona.

The course intends to show the functioning and structure of the media in Spain. For that purpose, sessions will alternate theory and practice in order to reflect on the general communication system and its peculiarities, and there will be visits to the most important media in Barcelona. The course will give a historical and current, critical and reflexive point of view on the role of the communication media of the contemporary Spanish society and future perspectives on the burst of new technologies. The knowledge of the functioning of the media is essential to all citizens in the current modern societies.

The course offers an introduction to Spanish cinema from the beginning of democracy in Spain, during the seventies, until today, with a particular attention to those movie-makers that stand out for their artistic value as well as for their capacity to reflect the most important characteristics of Spanish contemporary reality and culture. The different course sessions will explain the plural imaginary of the most recent Spanish cinema, through the work of filmmakers such as Pedro Almodovar, Victor Erice, Julio Medem, Alejandro Amenabar, or Jose Luis Guerin. Students will have the chance to study the particular poetic art of these authors, the evolution of movie genres, and the importance of cinema in the Spanish society framework, as well as to attain throughout the course knowledge of cinematographic theory, and resources to analyze movies and establish relations with other type of artistic expressions, such as literature and painting. Finally, the course will offer the necessary theoretical tools to contextualize all other important issues within social, political and economical evolution in Spain, of the last decades.

Have the necessity of a survey of the cultural background of Barcelona. Wish to have a live approach to Barcelona's art works Students do not need to have any specific background in Spanish art or in art history to take this course. The course proposes to complement a theoretical overview of Spanish art with a practical approach to the works of art. Barcelona has a great art variety and richness, but there are some artists who have their main museum in the city, and who have an international prestige. These artists are: Gaudi, Picasso, Miro, Dali and Tapies. They are the main subjects of this course.

This course wants to introduce an overview on the most relevant Spanish philosphers of 20th century as well as to trace the mainstreams of modern Spanish philosphy using the Spanish thinkers approach to El Quijote. Most of these philosophers found in El Quijote the sinthesis of the Spanish metaphysic, and the universal fight between the Don Quijote idealis and Sancho Panza realism.
