MLA Style Guide
The Modern Language Association (MLA) recommends:
1. Formatting quotations
Do not use quotation marks.
Double-space the quotation.
Use a colon to introduce the quotation.
Indent the quotation one inch from the left margin.
Place the parenthetical citation (author and page number) after the period (or other mark of punctuation) that closes the block quotation.
Use the block quotation format for quotations more than four lines long.
2. Parenthetical citations
The MLA recommends underlining instead of italicizing. Basic information provided: author's last name and page number.
The parenthetical information should not repeat information given in the text.
Citing books, articles, and other sources parenthetically in the paper:
Author's name in text
Hobsbawm explains this concept (125-126).
Author's name in reference
The idea appears widely (Hobsbawm 125-126).
Copied quotation from an indirect reference material
Thompson denounced this pretention "it was a mistification of the past recreated by the moderns..."(qtd. in Hobsbawm 125).
Material found in indirect source
Thompson’s complained about modern interpretations (in Hobsbawm 125).
Two authors' names in reference
Modernity changes and modifies perspectives on the past (Hobsbawm and Ranger, 125).
Reference to volume and page in multivolume work

Hobsbawm believes that Thompson’s major contribution The Making is based on secondhand works (The Age of Extremes 165).

Hobsbawm emphasizes this point repeateadly (165, 201).

Both agree in the basic concept (Hobsbawm 165; Thompson 54).

Hobsbawm recognized that his opinion about the subject has change through the years.

Accoding to International Amnesty the problem is reaching international level (International Amnesty Report).
Electronic source ordered using paragraph numbers
The three colour flag represented all the new political forces (Hobsbawm, par. 12).

"Peter the Great was one of them" (Hobsbawm, ch. 3, sec. 5).
3. Formatting the Works Cited page
On separate pages at the end of the paper, list alphabetically by author every work cited in the paper. List only those sources actually cited in the paper
according to the following format:
