Urban Renewal Projects

The neighbourhoods of El Born, Santa Caterina and El Raval in the old city of Barcelona have each gone down somewhat different paths in their social and physical development. The aim of this exercise is to use them as case studies to examine the influence of different types of regeneration projects and urban development processes.

Students consider each of the three newly developed zones in class prior to completing the self guided field study. They are provided with a map detailing how to visit all three neighbourhoods. During the visit they must consider what factors have influenced the recent developments which have been undertaken and how successful they feel these projects have been.
