Wim Mellaerts

By training I am a historian, with a research interest in the history of criminality, policing and justice and the interstices between social history, legal anthropology and cultural theory. I also have special interest in comparative European history and the study of nationalism and ethnicity. The last seven years I have been working at University College London, teaching several types of history courses for both history majors and non-majors at all levels for European and American students.

Born and educated in Belgium (Europe's capital and a multinational state in its own right), having spent the last thirteen years studying and working in the UK and the last ten Summers visiting Spain (and now, for the time being, settled in Catalonia), I can strongly recommend the benefits of an international and cross-cultural learning (and working) environment. Although still a relative newcomer myself, with respect to Spain I can think of no better environment than the metropolis of Barcelona, currently and historically at the crossroads of a variety of cultures and languages.

I spend my free time reading, travelling, or catching up on new (art) movies. I hope soon to add cycling to this list, once I buy myself a new bike.
