I was born in Galicia, in a fishing village facing the Atlantic, so I guess it wasn't a surprise that from a very early age I
was infected by the travelling winds that swept the coast and felt tempted to pack and discover new lands "armed" with a rather
peculiar artifact: language. I was studying English Philology and my first opportunity to travel the world came in the shape of
an Erasmus grant that sent me to Manchester, U.K., where I finished my degree and had a first taste of what living abroad meant:
a challenging new environment, new friends, new academic experiences, new ways of being oneself. I felt I hadn't had enough after
a year, so I moved to Hull, on the English Eastern coast, where I was appointed as a Spanish teacher in a secondary school. At that
time I started learning German, and the following year I spent two semesters at the University of Heidelberg. From Germany I
moved back to U.K. to do a MA in General Linguistics, after being awarded a scholarship. I was tempted to go a bit further,
though, so upon graduating I let the winds take me to Northern California to work as a Spanish Lecturer at UC Berkeley for
three years. The same winds brought me back to Europe two years ago.
Besides teaching at IES I am currently doing a PhD in Critical Discourse Analysis at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra here in Barcelona.
Take my word for it, learning a foreign language is a key to not one but a thousand new worlds, be ready to embrace them! I also hope
that you, like most of us here, will fall for the thrilling human and cultural pulse of this city. Bienvenidos.
