The ocean has fascinated me since I was able to wear a diving mask. I spent the summers of my childhood under water, looking for starfish and crabs under the
boulders and watching the fish while maneuvering among the rocks. Angling was also an appealing activity and books about animals, marine or not, filled the
shelves of my bedroom. Thus, it is hardly surprising that I decided to be a biologist when I grew up and that selected a family of estuarine fish as the focus of
my PhD research. My professional activity has also focused on marine biology, as I have been involved in the creation of several marine reserves and coastal
nature reserves, the deployment of artificial reefs, the management of professional and recreational fisheries and the conservation of threatened species like
marine turtles. Furthermore, I have taught at several universities and currently I am associated professor at University Pompeu Fabra. Diving, angling and bird watching
still remain as my preferred hobbies, although they have to compete now with visiting tropical islands. However, competition is not very serious, as you can dive,
fish and watch birds also there.
