This course addresses the consequences that the different methods of development have had on rural farmers and indigenous populations. The course will be divided into three modules. The first one (History of Latin America from the perspective of development) will review the last two centuries of Latin American history. The second module (Crisis of the 1980s and the globalization process in Latin America) will focus on the effects of neo-liberal policies in the last two decades, their consequences on the population, and the social movements that have arisen as an alternative to this process. The final module of this class (International Cooperation: the Development Paradigm in Latin America) will discuss the limitations, consequences and politics of the methods of developments put into practice. This section will also introduce the tools and methodologies that are presently used in International Cooperation.

This course has been designed to introduce students to Hispanic cultures and their societies. Spain and Latin America will be approached from a transatlantic perspective taking into consideration their diversity and their complexity. Questions related to identity, nation and territory are essential and thus will be analyzed and discussed in class. The course will also inquire into the concept of culture and cultural identity and it will discuss perceptions of time, society, family, religion and values in Hispanic societies. Some basic communication theory will be presented and sites of cultural interest visited.

Cultural Studies in Spanish

This course offers the contents and tools required in order to understand the complex reality of the Spanish gypsy community, using their cultural and artistic expressions. The course will emphasize those gypsy artistic events considered cultural patrimony, such as flamenco music and literature, including oral tradition, that has been absorbed by Spanish culture as a part of its own national culture.

Film Studies in Spanish
FS350 Cinema and the City: Barcelona through the Camara Lens click for information click to download pdf
This is a practical documentary film making course, which considers the most important films of the genre and analyses the concept of the documentary film, along with the ethical question of how to represent reality in film. This course also follos the history of cinema in Barcelona, helping students to develop their own documentary film of Barcelona. We will study the basic elements of cinema: script writing, production and edition. The best documentary films produced in class with will be shown on Barcelona local television.

This course analyis Spanish history, from the crisis of the Restauration in 1923 until the end of the dictatorship, in 1975. The classes are organized in three sections. The first offers a general vision of the history of Spain, from the middle ages until Primo de Rivera's dictatorship. The second concentrates on the main issues surrounding social history in Spain, the role of the military and the church, nationalist movements, women and the working classes. Finally, the third section of this course looks at the political social and economic evolution in Spain, from 1923 to 1975, with special attention paid to the Spanish Civil War and the era of Franco .
